Abergele 5 2011
Ladies Outperform Men
THREE champions, one team prize and six other individual awards was the very satisfactory outcome for Prestatyn Running Club from Sunday’s Abergele 5, which incorporated the North Wales championships.
The three winners of the regional titles were Griff Owens (M60), Ron Harrison-Jones (M70) and Gay Waring (L50), while the ladies quartet of Jo McDonough, Sian Beck, Gay Waring and Shelley Ward took the team prize.

The women, in fact, outnumbered and generally out-performed the men, though there were some excellent runs, notably that of Russ Cheetham, who set a new personal best for the distance. It was also good to see Mike Davis making his debut in a red vest, although he is still far from being race fit.
The placings were: 25 Griff Owens 30.48 (1st M60 in open race and championship), 26 George Nicholls 30.57, 50 Gareth Brandrick 33.18, 54 Russ Cheetham 33.35, 82 Jo McDonough 34.55 (3rd senior lady in open race), 89 Paul Brandrick 35.19, 103 Arwel Jones 36.11, 105 John Hughes-Roberts 36.20, 107 Sian Beck 36.34 (2nd L35 in open race and championship), 129 Gay Waring 38.38 (2nd L50 in open and 1st in championship), 141 Shelly Ward 39.05, 144 Ron Harrison-Jones 39.16, (2nd M70 in open and 1st in championship), 160 Glenda Davies 40.22, 179 Eleri Jones 42.12, 181 Julie Logan 42.26 (pb), 186 Sharon Jones 42.49, 202 Mike Davies 43.42, 206 Helen Baxandall 43.57, 212 Erin Ross 44.38, 221 June Cooke 45.26 (3rd L55 in open race), 229 Gill Brandrick 46.27, 242 Claire Gadsby 48.17.
Julie Logan is still on a “high” after her performance in last week’s Snowdonia Marathon when she clocked 4-37, crossing the line with clubmate Helen Ashworth after the two had had a cat-and-mouse battle over the 26 miles.
Julie had extra reason to be pleased at she raised £800 for Marie Curie Cancer Care in memory of her late father.
Six members of the club have been named in the North Wales squad for the Welsh inter-regional cross-country championships in Builth Wells on December 10. They are Amie Bagnall (U20), Katie Brandrick and Jo McDonough (SL), Brenda Tiedtke (L45+), George Nicholls (M40) and Griff Owens (M50).
The Welsh Masters’ championships will be held in conjunction with the inter-regional competition and members are reminded that they must enter that event themselves.
This weekend presents a quandary for the club with the third fixture of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross-Country League at Northop on Saturday and the second Borders League race at Wallasey the following day.
