Chester Spring 5 Ladies Shine

Prestatyn Running Club’s women outnumbered the men in the Spring 5 race at Chester and there was cause for general satisfaction as four members were placed in the top three in their respective categories.

John Hughes-Roberts led the 10-strong contingent home in 140th place overall, with a time of 35.45. Just 12 places back was captain Glenda Davies, who had another very strong run and won the L50 class in 36.08.

Just three days after his half-marathon pb Russ Cheetham showed no signs of tiredness with an excellent 36.29 (162nd) and Gareth Hughes was second M65 in 36.55 for 170th place.

Bill Scriven, in his first competition for a long time, was 183rd in 37.37 and he was closely followed in succession by Brenda Tiedtke (191 in 38.10), Sian Beck (196 in 38.24), a fast-finishing Amie Bagnall (203 in 38.41, 3rd U20), Gay Waring (221 in 39.24, 2nd L50) and Eleri Jones (289 in 43.03).

Griff Owens, who has been named as North Wales Master Runner for 2010 – the second time in succession he has won the title – won his M60 class in Sunday’s Air Products 10k in Crewe. He clocked 38.15, just 25 seconds behind clubmate George Nicholls.r

Glenda Davies has been named as Runner of the Month for March as a result of her storming run in the Border League fixture at Deeside – and that was before she produced the goods again in Chester.

Only one member was in competitive action at the weekend, and that was latest recruit Russ Cheetham. He returned to his old stomping ground of Leigh for the Pennington Flash half-marathon and turned in a brilliant performance, knocking 14 minutes off his previous best for the distance to finish in 1-36.28.

Any members interested in competing in the BMAF road relays on May 21 are asked to notify Gareth Hughes as soon as possible.

Training has gone well for all four of the club’s representatives in next Sunday’s London Marathon – Shelley Ward, Sharon Jones, Matthew Anwyl and Lee Bailey – though Lee has had relatively little time to get the miles in

Lee Bailey is supporting Marie Curie Cancer Nurses in memory of his father-in-law who passed away recently.
