Conwy Half Marathon 2011

ONLY five members of Prestatyn Running Club turned out in Sunday’s Conwy half-marathon and, unlike last year when there was a large female contingent, all were men.

Matthew Anwyl led the squad home in 34th place overall with a time of 83.43, and exactly one minute and eight places behind him was fellow M40 vet George Nicholls. Russ Cheetham set yet another personal best, crossing the line in 167th place in 96.47 and Roger Wadon was next in 1-59.00.

Super-vet Eddie Naisby, now 83, clocked an amazing 2-13.51, which many a quarter of his age would have been proud of.

His comment was “A bit slow, but I did it.”

David Owen was the club’s only representative this year in the Penmaenmawr fell-race and he finished 128th overall in 1-50.52.

Tonight ((Wed)) the club will not be meeting at Saints as usual but will be having a trial 5k event at Marsh Tracks in Rhyl. The event, which, if successful, could lead to full races early next year, starts at 7.15pm and entry costs £2. It is open to anyone who wants to come along.

Next weekend Ron Harrison-Jones will make his debut for Wales when he turns out in the M70 class in the British and Irish Masters’ Cross-Country International in Glasgow. Dave Hughes was also in the team but at the time of going to press was unsure whether he would be travelling. If he doesn’t go then his place is expected to be taken by Ron’s older brother Roger.

At the same meeting Griff Owens once again runs in the M60 class which he won two years ago.
