Griff owens Top Road Runner in N Wales

FOR the third year in succession Prestatyn Running Club’s super-vet Griff Owens has been named as the top Veteran Road Runner of the Year in North Wales.

The award is judged over a range of distances from 5k to half-marathon and is age-graded. Griff, who is in the M60 class, scored an exceptionally high 91.8% on the grading system.

In the women’s table the club’s second-claim member Emma Collins (Denbigh, L45) was placed third.

It was personal bests all the way for many of the members who competed in the Twin Piers 10k, thanks to a following wind in the opening stages along Llandudno promenade.

Apart from the satisfaction of recording fast times five members were also among the prizewinners. Russ Cheetham’s third place in the M45 class was his first award since joining the club last year, while the loudest applause of the day was for Eddie Naisby, who won the M80 category.

The placings were: 25 George Nicholls 36.51, 58 Russ Cheetham 40.20 (3rd M45), 77 Jo McDonough 41.34 (2nd senior lady), 106 Des Davies 42.53, 112 Gareth Harrison-Jones 43.25, 150 David Owen 46.02 (2nd M60), 157 Shelley Ward 46.20 (2nd L40), 161 Sian Beck 46.32 (3rd L35), 164 Gay Waring 46.40, 169 Ron Harrison-Jones 46.59 (2nd M70), 179 Roger Harrison-Jones 47.27 (3rd M70), 197 Sharon Jones 48.36, 204 Glenda Davies 49.10, 225 Helen Ashworth 50.53, 235 John Jones 51.22, 247 Julie Logan 52.41, 303 Eddie Naisby 56.30 (1st M80).

Good news for the club and for local youngsters is that a junior section is to be revived thanks to support from Welsh Athletics. The sessions at Prestatyn High School are expected to start in March and volunteers are sought who are prepared to help in any way or take a coaching course.

This Saturday the club hosts the Rhug Organics North Wales Cross-Country Championships for the third time at Corwen, and although the captains would like as many members as possible to compete there is still a need for more marshals.

The club’s annual social on April 14 will have a special significance this time because it marks the 30th anniversary of the club and  there is an open invitation to former members to attend. Anyone interested is asked to contact Gareth Hughes as soon as possible as demand is expected to exceed supply.
