THE big numbers were undoubtedly taking part in the Llandudno 10 at the weekend, but for Prestatyn Running Club the outstanding performance came in a very different race.

For the first time the club’s over-45s’ ladies team took part in the British Masters’ road relays in Sutton Park, Birmingham, an event in which the men last competed about 2 years ago.

The trio did themselves and the club proud in what is a highly competitive event, finishing 7th out of 14 teams. Brenda Tiedtke led off, finishing the three-mile course in 22.12, and she handed over to Gay Waring, whose time was just five seconds faster. Club captain Glenda Davies, in great form of late, took the anchor leg and moved the team up the placings with a time of 21.5.

Naturally they were delighted with their performance and are determined to return next year.

Twenty members turned out in the Llandudno 10, in which the 1,200 entrants were battered by fierce winds as they went along the prom.

Three members came away with awards and two others would have done so had they registered with Welsh Athletics in time.

Griff Owens won the M60 class in both the open race and Welsh championship, which was incorporated in the race, while Gordon Jones ran a superbly judged race to come third in the M50 class in the open event and second in the championship.

Sandy Roberts, who only recently rejoined the club, showed great form to take second place in the open L50 class and would have won the Welsh title had she joined sooner.
