Eddie Nominated for Olympic Torch Relay
PRESTATYN Running Club’s super-vet Eddie Naisby has been nominated by the club to take part in next year’s Olympic torch relay.
The club committee named the 83-year-old for the honour because of his inspirational example in coming back from serious illness to compete in some tough races..
“The organisers of the Round Britain Relay were appealing for people who ‘go the extra mile’ and set an example to others in the community, whether inside or outside of sport, and we felt that Eddie fully met those criteria,” said club secretary Gareth Hughes.
Eddie received the loudest cheer of the day when he picked up the prize for the first M80 runner in last weekend’s Llyn Brenig nine-mile trail race.
George Nicholls First Home
He was one of four club members to pick up awards – George Nicholls was 3rd M40, Gareth Hughes 1st M60 and David Owen 2nd M60.
There was a good turnout of members for the revived event, in which competitors faced a testing course with plenty of mud, as well as a stiff wind in the closing stages.
Russ Cheetham Pulls Out with Hamstring
It was a frustrating day for Russ Cheetham who had to jog the last two miles after pulling a hamstring.
The placings were: 19 George Nicholls 62.03, 36 Paul Brandrick 69.20, 48 Jo McDonough 74.33, 49 Gareth Hughes 74.44, 50 Katie Brandrick 74.49, 52 David Owen 75.01, 58 Sharon Jones 80.55, 64 Eleri Goddard 84.32, 66 Duncan Longley 85.22, 70 Julie Logan 87.27, 72 Mel Hooper 89.34, 75 Russ Cheetham 92.42, 76 Gill Brandrick 92.57, 77 Eddie Naisby 99.27. Helen Baxandall was the club’s only representative in Sunday’s Great North Run, and in a 35,000 strong field she finished in 16,925th place with a time of 2-07, albeit three minutes down on last year.
In the Gawsworth 10k in Cheshire Andrew Jones finished eighth overall and was third M40 in 39.09.
Last week Sandy Roberts represented the club in the Nottingham Marathon and had good reason to be pleased with her time of 4-14.
This weekend several members will be officiating at the Commonwealth 24-hour championships in Llandudno, the most prestigious athletics event ever staged in the region.
