London Marathon 2011

There were 4 runners Representing Prestatyn in The Virgin 2011 London Marathon

All four of the club’s representatives in last week’s London Marathon can be very proud of their performances. Matthew Anwyl took 90 seconds off his pb to clock 2-55.24 and Lee Bailey was next in 3-35.57, which was highly commendable as he was awarded a club place only in February and so missed months of training.

Shelley Ward achieved her aim of breaking the four-hour barrier in 3-58.46 but had to go through agonies with cramp to do so. Despite the problem she finished strongly, her final 5k being the fastest of the race. Arguably the best showing came from Sharon Jones who maintained her recent good form by slicing six minutes off her pb in 4-24.45.

This Saturday sees the annual North Wales 10-mile championships which areagain incorporated into the Wrexham 10-mile race, and Prestatyn’s men and women have an excellent record in the event over the past 20 years.

Meanwhile on the Fells:

PRESTATYN Running Club’s women once again outnumbered the men in the Moel Lus race at Dwygyfylchi last week, which was a counter in the club’s Grand Prix.

Chris Hayes, who had done the tough Llantysilio fell-race just three days earlier, led the ten members home, and he was followed by Gordon Jones, making a rare outing on the fells. The third finisher was Des Davies, making a welcome return to competition after several months out through injury.

Ladies’ captain Glenda Davies, in such good form recently, had to concede this time to Brenda Tiedtke, who beat her by just three seconds. The race marked the debuts on the fells of Mel Hooper and Erin Ross.

Only one member was in competitive action at the weekend, and that was latest recruit Russ Cheetham. He returned to his old stomping ground of Leigh for the Pennington Flash half-marathon and turned in a brilliant performance, knocking 14 minutes off his previous best for the distance to finish in 1-36.28.

The placings were: 19 Chris Hayes 26.50, 32 Gordon Jones 27.51, 62 Des Davies 30.37, 82 Brenda Tiedtke 32.36, 84 Glenda Davies 32.39 (3rd L50), 99 David Owen 36.46, 103 Mel Hooper 38.19, 105 Erin Ross 39.43, 106 Julie Logan 40.24, 108 Tracy Colligan 42.45.

On Saturday Chris Hayes and Neil Owen took part in the tough Ras y Moelwyn in Blaenau Festiniog. Both had also competed in the Llantysilio fell-race the previous weekend, so for Chris it was his third fell-race in eight days.
