Man v horse

TWELVE members of Prestatyn Running Club took on a new challenge in the hills of Powys at the weekend and despite the mud, rain and tough course had a thoroughly good time.

The four teams of three took part in the 31st Man v Horse Marathon at Llanwrtyd Wells, where 50 riders, 111 relay teams and over 300 individuals competed over a very hilly 22-mile multi-terrain course.

Each of the three stages included some tarmac, farm tracks, forest trails, open mountainside – and a lot of mud, culminating in a river crossing just before the finish.

The first trio in 26th place overall and 10th out of 111 relay teams, was Oliver Harrison-Jones, Gareth Bailey and Andrew Jones, who clocked 2-46.33. They were followed by Paul Brandrick, Gareth Hughes and Des Davies (27th team and 1st M50 team in 3-01.53), then Shelly Ward, Brenda Tiedtke and Glenda Davies (38th and 1st L40 team 3-10.43) and the combination of an injury-hampered John Hughes-Roberts, Leah Hughes and Mike Lindsay (49th in 3-16.35).

Park Hall 5k

Three of the club’s super-vets renewed their friendly rivalry in last week’s Park Hall 5k in Oswestry, and this time Ronald Harrison-Jones gained revenge over his brother Roger who beat him in the recent Sun Centre 5k.

Ron won the M70 class in 24.07, with Roger 32 seconds behind and Dave Hughes third in 24.52. Griff Owens was an easy winner of the M60 class and was 11th overall in 18.14, and the club’s only female representative, Sharon Jones, finished between the two brothers in 24.35.

Annual Relays

Three teams of five took part in the club’s annual relays on the Tip Lane circuit, with the squad of Callum Smith, Sandy Roberts, Paul Das, Gay Waring and Iwan Jones coming out victorious in 30.57. Mike Lindsay, Shelly Ward, Duncan Longley, Gareth Hughes and Oliver Harrison-Jones came next in 31.16 and Gareth Bailey, Mel Hooper, John Jones, Sian Beck and Amie Bagnall third in 33.15. The fastest stage was run by Oliver Harrison-Jones in 5.18.

Runner of the Month

George Nicholls has been named as the club’s Runner of the Month for May after his return to form in the Market Drayton 10k, Llandudno 10 and the Sun Centre 5k.

The club is hoping to have another outing to the Gravy Run near Glossop on July 17 after last year’s trip was enjoyed by all who travelled. Anyone interested is asked to let Gareth Hughes know as soon as possible.
