Prestatyn Has Two Champions

TWO members of Prestatyn Running Club have once again become North Wales champions.

There was a good turnout from the club in Sunday’s Caernarfon 10k, which incorporated the regional championships, and it was no surprise that Griff Owens took the M60 title with ease in 38.47.

The other champion was Roger Harrison-Jones, who this time got the better of his brother Ronald by 31 seconds to win the M70 category with a time of 49.28.

Dean Longley was the club’s first finisher, coming seventh overall in 36.11. The other placings were: 19 Griff Owens 38.47, 32 George Nicholls 40.40, 45 Des Davies 43.34, 55 Russ Cheetham 44.53, 60 John Hughes-Roberts 45.36, 66 Mike Lindsay 46.55, 89 Roger Harrison-Jones 49.28, 92 Ronald Harrison-Jones 49.59, 96 Dave Hughes 51.25, 101 Sharon Jones 51.40.

Only four members took part in this year’s Moel Famau race on Bank Holiday Monday, a smaller contingent then usual. Cross-country captain Dean Longley led the quartet home in 15th place overall in 37.13, and he was followed by Matthew Anwyl, who was just two positions and 28 seconds behind.

George Nicholls was next home in 48th place with 41.20, and the ever-improving David Owen was 132nd in 50.30.

Three days later Dean was again the club’s first finisher in the final race in Deestriders’ Off-Road Grand Prix in Shotton. The race, which saw the comeback of captain Glenda Davies after surgery, was again marred by problems when vandals removed some of the marking tape, resulting in Russ Cheetham, among others, going astray.

The placings were: 7 Dean Longley 29.51, 16 George Nicholls 32.11, 36 Des Davies 35.25, 49 Russ Cheetham 38.33 (3rd M45), 53 Steve Hatfield 38.51 (3rd M60), 56 Shelley Ward 39.01 (1st L40), 63 Glenda Davies 42.12 (1st L50), 67 Sharon Jones 43.24 (2nd L40).

Over the series Shelley Ward won the L40 class and Sharon Jones was second, Glenda Davies was first L50 and Steve Hatfield was 3rd M60. Although she missed the final race Brenda Tiedtke had already done enough to win the L45 class.
