Welsh Championships Builth Wells 2011

ONLY five members of Prestatyn Running Club travelled to Builth Wells on Saturday for the Welsh inter-regional and Welsh Masters’ cross-country championships, but they came away with two medals.

Jo McDonough and Katie Brandrick were in the North Wales senior ladies’ team and both turned in highly creditable performances. Jo was 17th overall in 32.41 and Katie was only three places behind in 34.12 despite going off-course due to an inattentive marshall.

In the Masters’ championship Roger Harrison-Jones finished second in 28.45 in the M70 class and the other medal went to Gareth Hughes, who was third M65 in 43.09. He was placed 77th overall in the 40-69 race, with Russ Cheetham an excellent 65th in 39.43.

Border League Tattenhall

Less than 24 hours later Russ was in action again, finishing second in a much-depleted team in the Borders Road-Running League fixture at Tattenhall. It was the biggest points total ever accrued by the men’s team, who fielded the bare minimum of 10 runners.

Jo McDonough also “doubled up” and led home the ladies’ team which was also missing several regular runners.

The placings were: 47 George Nicholls, 109 Russ Cheetham, 115 Gareth Bailey, 153 John Hughes-Roberts, 158 Tony Benton, 164 Paul Brandrick, 166 Arwel Jones, 167 Jo McDonough, 176 Sian Beck, 186 David A Jones, 203 Steve Hatfield, 209 Shelley Ward, 210 Gay Waring, 224 Jayne Penrhyn-Jones, 232 Sharon Jones, 242 Eleri Jones, 247 John Jones, 263 Helen Baxandall, 269 Gill Brandrick.

Tonight ((Wed)) the club is holding its annual pre-Christmas social run and a prize will be offered for the best fancy-dress costume. It will be followed by a buffet arranged by Gill Brandrick
