long trip to Lilleshall in Shropshire 2012

THE fourth and penultimate fixture in the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross-Country League proved a huge disappointment for Prestatyn Running Club with only six men and six women making the long trip to Lilleshall in Shropshire.

The lack of overall support, exacerbated by a injuries and work commitments, was highlighted by the fact that the six male counters included one over 60 and two over 65, as well as Steve Caswell, who was making his League debut after joining the club only a couple of weeks ago. He had good reason to be very satisfied with his first outing on the country.

George Nicholls continued his good form to lead the team home in 44th place overall, and Russ Cheetham, too, continued his improvement.

There were some other bright spots, however, with brothers Ron and Roger Harrison-Jones again dominating the over-70s’ event and the ladies, despite several absentees, finishing second in Division 2 to consolidate their position and keep themselves with an outside chance of promotion. As usual, they packed well as a team and had some interesting battles amongst themselves.

 The placings were:- Men: 44 George Nicholls 35.12, 95 Russ Cheetham 40.27, 109 Gareth Hughes 42.44 (3rd M65), 111 Steve Caswell 42.54, 119 Steve Hatfield 44.37, 121 David Owen 45.54. M70: 1 Ron Harrison-Jones 26.43, 2 Roger Harrison-Jones 27.22. Ladies: 33 Shelley Ward 25.50, 35 Gay Waring 26.00, 38 Brenda Tiedtke 26.23, 48 Amy Bagnall 28.02, 49 Sharon Jones 28.39, 50 Eleri Jones 28.44.

Volunteers are still being sought to marshal at the Rhug Organics North Wales Cross-Country Championships on January 28, which the club is hosting, and those members intending to run are reminded that they must submit their own entries

Ron Harrison-Jones claimed his second victory in the M70 class in the cross-country league, finishing 34 seconds ahead of brother Roger.

The men finished fourth in Division 2 on the day, the Masters were fifth and the ladies a highly creditable third.

Having run for her first-claim club Denbigh the previous day Emma Collins made her Borders League debut in the red vest at Birkenhead Park and she had another storming run, leading the ladies home in 103rd place overall.

It was also brilliant to see Jayne Penrhyn-Jones back in action after about two years out with injuries, though her final position was not known at the time of going to press.

George Nicholls, who had also competed in the cross-country, led the under-strength men’s team home in 49th place, with Gareth Brandrick having an excellent run as second finisher. Third man home on both days was the evergreen Griff Owens, who won the M60 class at both meetings.

Russ Cheetham continued his impressive improvement, and loyal second-claimer David Alan Jones become a member of the elite band to have completed 100 Borders League fixtures.

Cross-Country placings were:- Senior men: 35 Matthew Anwyl 35.34, 51 Dean Longley 36.22, 57 Griff Owens 36.55 (1st M60), 59 George Nicholls 37.15, 98 Gareth Bailey 40.34, 104 Russ Cheetham 40.56, 124 Arwel Jones 42.38, 152 David Owen 48.27. M70: 1 Ron Harrison-Jones 22.14, 2 Roger Harrison-Jones 22.48, 3 David Hughes 23.09. ILLNESS, injuries and other commitments left Prestatyn Running Club with a severely weakened team for the second fixture of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross-Country League at St David’s College, Llandudno.

With only eight men lining up, including League debutants Iwan Jones and Russ Cheetham, the men were outnumbered by the women, who had 10 in action.

George Nicholls led the men home in 58th place, with Griff Owens 75th and first M60. Cousins Lee and Gareth Bailey had their own family battle, while behind them Iwan Jones just beat a fast-finishing Russ Cheetham. Paul Brandrick and super-vet David Owen made up the squad.

Jo McDonough, making rare outing on the country, led the women home in 38th place, and there was the usual excellent support from Katie Brandrick, Brenda Tiedtke, Shelley Ward – back in action after illness – Glenda Davies, Eleri Goddard and Eleri Jones. The strong squad was completed by Amie Bagnall, Sharon Jones and Helen Baxandall.

On November 23 the club is holding a 5k run on the Marsh Tracks site in Rhyl, and if it proves successful a short series of 5k races may follow early next year.

Members of all standards as well as members of other local clubs are welcome to attend. The entry fee will be £2 and no prizes will be awarded.
