March 2010
PRESTATYN Running Club’s super-vet Griff Owens turned in another brilliant performance in the British Masters’ Cross-Country Championships at the weekend – but this time had to settle for silver.
After his victory in the M60 class at last November’s British and Irish international in Birmingham there were real hopes that he would clinch a magnificent double in the grounds of Stormont Castle, Belfast.
With his excellent leg-speed the fast, firm course suited him but he had to concede defeat to a relative youngster, Desmond Michael (Barnet), who moved into the M60 class only a week before.
Griff was in contention throughout but on the fourth and final lap Michael edged away to win by about 100 metres. His time for the 8k course was 30.15.
Two other Prestatyn veterans also had very satisfying outings. In the M55 class George Nixon ran very strongly, finishing within sight of Griff, while in the M70 category, held in conjunction with the ladies’ competition, Roger Harrison-Jones ran an even-paced race to finish about 10th.
Due to technical problems George and Roger’s exact times and positions are still not known.
The club’s annual meeting will be held on March 26, and anyone wishing to have an item placed on the agenda is asked to notify Gareth Hughes as soon as possible.
The following evening the annual social and prizegiving will take place at Melyd Golf Club and with spaces limited those wishing to attend are asked to order and pay for a ticket from Mike Doolan within the next couple of weeks.
The Member of the Year will be chosen on the night, but last week the committee decided on the recipients of some of the other awards, which will be announced at the social. The nominees were:- Most Improved Male – Matt Sims, Roger Harrison-Jones, Steve Hatfield, Dean Longley and Neil Owen; Most Improved Female – Brenda Tiedtke, Sian Beck, Eleri Jones and Jayne Penrhyn-Jones; New Member – Andrew Whitehouse, Griff Owens; Fell Runner of the Year – Tracy Colligan, Steve Hatfield, Neil Owen, Glenda Davies and Des Davies.
It was also decided to reinstate the Junior Member of the Year award because of the growing number of juniors attending the club and competing. The winner of the award will receive the Eddie Faure Memorial Trophy.
Entry forms are now available for the club’s annual races, the Sun Centre 5k on May 26, when a junior 1,000-metre race will also be held – and the Riverbank Run and Eddie Faure Memorial 10k on June 20.
