MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING HELD AT THE NORTH WALES BOWLS CENTRE ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1st, 2011, AT 7PM.
PRESENT: Gareth Hughes, Paul Brandrick, Steve Hatfield, Jason Burton, Gay Waring, Dean Longley, Rhian Williams, Linda Williams and Gareth Bailey. In the absence of the chairman and vice-chairman Paul Brandrick took the chair.
APOLOGIES were received from Arwel Jones, Phil Jones, Shelley Ward, Glenda Davies, Brenda Tiedtke, Dave Hughes and Dave Henley.
Gareth welcomed Linda back after illness and reported that Gill Brandrick was to receive a Welsh Athletics Meritorious Award. Members congratulated her on the achievement. Members also sent their best wishes to Dave Hughes’s wife Dorothy who was in hospital after a fall.
MINUTES of the committee meeting held on October 13th, 2011, were received, confirmed and signed by the chairman.
MATTERS ARISING 1. Gareth told the meeting that the 10k planned by Win Mullen-James in January had been cancelled because of a number of problems which had arisen. It was possible an event would be held later in 2012.
CORRESPONDENCE 1 Cross-country results etc from David A Williams. 2. Details of sports tours by Laranja Tours. 3. Flyers for Nightingale House’s Santa Run. 4. E-mail from Yonatan Ephrem re Eritrean athletes. 5. Brochure from Perform Better equipment.
TREASURER’S REPORT Steve reported a balance of £4,190 in the bank including the £2,000 grant received from Npower. Gareth said that Tom Last of TDL Events had informed him that a basic electronic clock would cost about £2,750 plus VAT and delivery, and it was agreed that an application be made for a Community Chest grant. The grant should also cover the cost of coaching courses. The committee further agreed that some bilingual race signs be ourchasede from Running Imp.
MEMBERSHIP Steve reported that membership had reached 92. Applications were approved from Michael Davis and Emma Collins (both 2nd claim seniors)
MEN’S CAPTAIN’S REPORT Paul summarized recent activities including the first Borders League fixture at Prestatyn where the men had finished 2nd in Division 2. Despite them having been sixth in the second fixture they remained 2nd overall. Paul thanked those who had “doubled up” by running two races in two days. He also made special reference to David A Jones who had completed 100 Borders League races for the club, and it was agreed to present a trophy to him to mark the achievement.
LADIES’ CAPTAIN’S REPORT - None available
CROSS-COUNTRY CAPTAIN’S REPORT Dean said that despite numbers being down for various reasons the club had done pretty well in the two North Wales League fixtures, and it was good to see Iwan Jones, Lee Bailey and Russ Cheetham making their League debuts. He congratulated Dave Hughes, Griff Owens and Ron and Roger Harrison-Jones having been chosen for Wales for the British and Irish Masters’ international in Glasgow. Congratulations were also due to the following members in the North Wales squad for the Welsh inter-regional championships in Builth Wells on December 10: Griff Owens, George Nicholls, Matt Anwyl, Brenda Ti9edtke, Katie Brandrick, Jo McDonough and Amie Bagnall.
FELL-RUNNING REPORT – None available.
JUNIORS Gareth said he had attended a meeting called by Denbighshire’s leisure service officers at which Matthew Hilliker, Volunteer and Coach Development Officer, explained his role. Gareth said he felt the club could benefit from some of Matthew’s proposals, including the use of volunteers from the High School
SOCIAL 1. It was agreed that the pre-Christmas run on December 14 would be in fancy-dress, with a prize for the best outfit. 2. Paul agreed to order the trophies for the annual “do” at the Bod Erw on April 14. It was agreed to give an award for the Best Marshall and a special award to Eddie Naisby to mark his inspirational achievement in coming back to competition after serious illness. 3. Members were urged to make enquiries about a suitable race in July or August, 2012, for a club outing instead of the Gravy Run.
SUN CENTRE 5K Gareth said he had written to Rhyl Town Council seeking sponsorship and he asked members to come forward with names of possible sponsors. Jason and Dean agreed to take full responsibility for the Juniors’ 1k race.
RIVERBANK RUN – No further details available
MARSH TRACKS Gareth said that about 40 people had attended the trial 5k at Marsh Tracks and the feedback had been very positive. It was agreed to hold an official race there on Friday, March 2, with separate races for sub-22 mins runners and over-22 mins runners. It was also decided to hold a table of prizes instead of distributing awards in each class. Entry fee would be £4.
NORTH WALES CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS. Jason had decided not to be Chief Marshal for the event on January 28, 2012, and the committee agreed to ask Dave Henley to fill the role.
ANY OTHER BUSINESS Gareth sought the views of members on holding some event to mark the 2012 London Olympics and it was agreed to hold a “Fun Olympics” sometime during the summer. It was also decided to hold a fundraising event in the weeks leading up to the Olympics in which people would be asked to pay £1 to guess the winning time in the men’s marathon.
