Border League Mold March 2010
Griff and George were among those missing from the club’s Border League team for the fourth fixture at Mold, when the 16-strong men’s squad was led home by Matt Sims, who was 19th. He was very closely followed by Thomas Roberts (20th) and Dean Longley (22nd), who was carrying an injury.
Lower down the field Gareth Bailey had a particularly good run and the race also saw the debut in club colours of Denbigh-based veteran David Owen. Back among the counters was club chairman Arwel Jones after a troublesome injury.
Some of the regular members of the ladies’ team were also missing, but Jayne Penrhyn Jones made a welcome return to competition after a lengthy lay-off and was the first finisher. She was followed by the much-improved Sian Beck, whilst Shelly Ward had her best run for a long time.
The placings were: 19 Matt Sims, 20 Thomas Roberts, 22 Dean Longley, 34 George Nicholls, 63 Martin Cortvriend, 71 Neil Owen, 79 Gareth Bailey, 101 Paul Brandrick, 110 Arwel Jones, 118 John Hughes-Roberts, 119 David Davies, 128 Tony Benton, 129 Steve Hatfield, 144 Jayne Penrhyn Jones, 149 David A Jones, 156 Mike Lindsey, 159, Sian Beck, 167 Glenda Davies, 171 Shelly Ward, 180 Eleri Goddard, 197 David Owen, 206 Sharon Hullett, 213 Gill Brandrick.
Several of the club’s youngsters are emulating their senior colleagues by shining in cross-country meetings. All six who represented their schools in the Prestatyn and Rhyl area finals in Rhyl last week won through to the county stage.
Josh Ablett had an outstanding run to win the Years 5 and 6 race, with Mathew Vaughan taking 15th place. Lucy McEwan justified her place as pre-race favourite by winning the 9 and 10 years’ section, closely followed by Abigail Burton, and in the Years 7 and 8 event Ceri Vaughan and Jenna Bagnall – sister of 15-year-old Amie – were third and fourth respectively.
Members are reminded that the club’s annual meeting will be held at the North Wales Indoor Bowls Centre at 7.30pm on March 26, with the annual social and prizegiving the following evening.
