   CLUB HI-VIS POLICY

⚠️ Prestatyn Running Club Winter Training & Visibility Policy

To ensure the safety of all our members and to maintain our insurance cover through Welsh Athletics, the following rules apply to all official club runs held between September 14th and March 31st (or whenever visibility is low):

1. Mandatory High-Visibility Clothing

●        The Rule: All members must wear a high-visibility fluorescent AND reflective top, bib, jacket or equivalent during evening club sessions.

o   As a minimum rule the runners TORSO must be equally or more fluorescent AND reflective as this product : Example high viz garment

o   Specifically the majority of the torso is covered in fluorescent AND reflective materials.

o   To confirm white or a “light colour” is not fluorescent.

o   This must be worn for the entirety of the club meet.

●        Reflective vs. Fluorescent: While "neon" colours are great for dusk, reflective strips are mandatory for after-dark sessions to ensure you are visible to motorists from all angles.

●        No High-Vis, No Run: Our Run Leaders have the authority (and the committee’s full support) to ask a member not to join the group run if they are not wearing appropriate high-visibility gear. This is for the safety of the individual and the entire group.

2. Headtorches and Chest Lights

●        Town/Lit Routes: Headtorches are strongly recommended to help you spot uneven pavements, wet leaves, or ice.

●        Unlit/Rural Routes: For any sessions taking place on unlit paths or country lanes, a working headtorch or chest light will be mandatory.

●        Dazzle Protocol: Please be mindful of oncoming traffic and fellow runners; tilt your light downwards when approaching others to avoid blinding them.

3. Group Safety & Awareness

●        The Pre-Run Brief: Listen to the Run Leader’s safety briefing. They will highlight specific hazards (e.g., "flooding on Bridge Street" or "leaf mulch on the park path").

●        Look Out for Each Other: If you see a fellow member's light failing or notice they are blending into the shadows, please alert them and the Run Leader immediately.

Why this matters:

As an affiliated club, we are protected by UK Athletics Public Liability Insurance. However, this cover relies on the club taking "reasonable steps" to manage risk. By following this policy, you help protect the club, our volunteers, and—most importantly—yourself.

The policy will be reviewed annually in April by the committee, taking into account its implementation during the previous winter period.
