Gareth's press report - 23rd February 2025

The severe weekend weather threw up an interesting contrast between sheeptracks and a motor-racing track, and between road and fell-runners.

Sunday’s fixture of the Borders Road-Running League on the Mon Racing Circuit in Anglesey was called off because of the gale which had been forecast, the second time for the fixture to fall foul of the elements.

On the same day, however, the annual Sheeptracks Trail races went ahead in the Clwydian Hills, competitors having to brave the wind, rain and mud. Three members of Prestatyn Running Club took part, Lee Bailey taking on the longer 28k race, which involved 10 checkpoints, and Sophie Johnson and Mandy Cartwright tackled the 19k race. All three finished inside the cut-off times, and appreciated the hot bean chilli, cakes and tea which followed.

The bad weather was in stark contrast to conditions the previous day, with 24 club members taking advantage of the fine conditions to enjoy seven different Parkruns.

In the Nova race the club claimed five of the first 10 finishers, with first place going to Dan Williams, who is currently training for next week’s Chester 10k and Liverpool Half. Once again Jonah Armstrong had to settle for second place.  Results: 1 Dan Williams 18.30, 2 Jonah Armstrong 19.21, 5 Oliver Birch-Jones 19.59, 6 Dafydd Montgomery 20.07, 8 Dave Ellis 20.34, 14 Cam Askan 21.18, 21 Ed Shirt 22.38, 35 Andy Clark 24.08, 65 Jamie Betts 25.53, 80 Martin Cortvriend 28.09, 94 Zack Webster 29.31, 99 Mike Davis 29.51, 153 Claudia Smith 37.57, 194 Nicki Triggs 52.11.

Other Parkrun results:-

Greenfield Valley: 36 Sophie Johnson 27.13, 38 Mandy Cartwright 27.20, 51 Andy Carter 29.10.

Erddig: 50 Vic Manley 27.37, 172 Clare Manley 36.27.

Crosby: 135 Steve Weedman 30.36, 139 Debbie Weedman 30.55.

Rutland Water: 366 Helen Alefounder 59.26.

Barrow: 74 Mark Dakeyne 28.40.

Newtown: 70 Andy Scott 27.36.

The club committee has agreed to offer to host the first fixture of next season’s David Alun Williams North Wales Cross-Country League on a new course at Llannerch Park, Trefnant. It may be held in conjunction with Denbigh Harriers.
