It was one of those weekends again, when a clash of fixtures tested the stamina and commitment of members of Prestatyn Running Club.
With Parkruns and the penultimate fixture of the David Alun Williams North Wales Cross-Country League on Saturday, followed on Sunday by the third race in the Borders Road-Running League a total of over 50 members were in competitive action, some of them turning out in two events.
Twenty members made the trip to Leaton near Shrewsbury for the cross-country fixture which saw the ladies cement their second place in Division 2 and making promotion a probability.
Once again the outstanding individual performance came from Steve Skates, who finished 8th overall in the senior men’s race. Having won the M45 class in previous races it was no surprise that he had to settle for second place this time as the overall winner was Maldwyn’s Commonwealth Games marathoner Andy Davies, making a rare appearance in the League.
The men finished 6th on the day but overall lie 3rd in Division 2, while the over-65s’ team, who were understrength on Saturday, are now fourth.
The placings were:- Ladies: 33 Leah Hughes 27.48, 34 Helen Ashworth 27.50, 38 Jenna Bagnall 28.19, 70 Sue Hughes 32.11 (3rd L65), 82 Nicki Triggs 34.30, 90 Emma Birchall 39.33, 94 Clare Manley 45.25, 95 Julie Evans 47.55.

In the Borders League race at Thurstaston the ladies did even better and now hold a comfortable lead in Division 2, while the men slipped to third. What was also encouraging was that while some of the club’s faster men were missing there were several excellent League debuts.

With other races lined up over the weekend, several members took things easy in the Parkruns, but that is not to denigrate the performance of Eve Manifold, who was the club’s first finisher in the Nova event.
