Promenade running may be flat and often fast, but strong winds over the past week presented a real challenge for competitors in local events.

First members of Prestatyn Running Club to face the experience were Oliver Birch-Jones, Ben Thomas and Nicki Triggs, who travelled to the Wirral for the first in this year’s Seaside 5k series in Leasowe.

There was a strong sidewind throughout, and the windblown sand made the going even tougher. It was Oliver’s first attempt in the event and he finished an excellent 28th overall in 18.30. Ben was 137th in 22.43 and Nicki 202nd in 28.04.

It was hardly surprising that none of the club’s 19 representatives in the Nova Parkrun recorded pbs even though the wind was behind them on some sections.

Tom Carter was first overall and once again the club had four among the first 10 finishers.

Cathy Wood took an even tougher battering as she took part in the Piece of String race on Moel Famau, the results of which have not yet been published.

To avoid the wind Alex Ryder opted for the Flint Castle Parkrun and it paid off, as he won comfortably in a pb of 18.20.

Greenfield Valley: 31 Debbie Jones 30.26.

Haughmond Hill (Shrewsbury): 11 Jenna Bagnall 24.13.
