Gareth's Press Report - 5th May 2024

There are 456 “Nuttalls” – mountains over 2,000 feet – in England and Wales, and a group of Prestatyn Running Club members are ticking them off at a fair old rate, with races virtually every week.

On Saturday four of them competed in what is regarded as a classic mountain race on Moel Eilio, above Llanberis, an eight-mile event involving a total of 3,000ft of ascent. In addition to Eilio itself it takes in Foel Gron, Foel Goch and Moel Cynghorion before a cruel, steep descent to the finish.

This time the honours went to Mandy Cartwright, who led the quartet home in 97th place overall, with a time of 1-56.12. Nine places behind was fellow captain Sophie Johnson (1-58.50), with Ann Claire Jones 114th in 2-07.17 and James Rogers 123rd in 2-23.11.

Only two club members made the midweek journey to Snowdonia for the fifth race in the Joe Brown Tuesday night series of fellraces, the straight-up-and-down Pen Dinas race.

Though the rain relented the course resembled a stream as competitors slogged up the very steep gradient. Ceri Vaughan had another fine run, coming 38th overall in 38.52. Mark Dakeyne was placed 73rd in 48.35.

Conditions were perfect for the Llangollen Trail 10k on Sunday in which Sue Hughes won her category and long-serving member Des Davies took second. Placings: 11 Jamie Betts 41.52, 79 Des Davies 56.50 (2nd M60-69), 80 Ally Reid 57.01 (2nd V50-59), 91 Sue Hughes 58.28 (1st L60-69), 135 Debbie Jones 65.30, 188 Julie Evans 86.11.

Also among the honours at the weekend was teenager Oliver Birch-Jones who finished second out of 69 competitors in the Ruthin Sprint Triathlon. His aggregate time of 1-09.29 comprised 6.15 (400m swim), 41.07 (25k bike ride) and 19.40 (5k run).

Supervet Martin Cortvriend claimed an age-group record whilst on his travels again. A week after his previous Parkrun near Manchester Airport he was in action in the Osborn Metropark Parkrun in Ohio. On a course consisting mainly of long grass he finished second overall and took three minutes off the M70 record in 24.34.

Three members set new pbs in the fast Ruthin Parkrun in which Cam Askam finished an excellent second in 19..36. Other placings were: 9 Paul Sanders 20.43 (pb), 10 Dave Ellis 20.43, 12 Ben Thomas 20.51, 18 Darren Thompson 22.08, 22 Andy Carter 23.22 (pb), 33 Nicki Triggs 26.18 (pb), 38 Arwel Jones 27.18.

Other Parkrun results:-

Nova: 4 Steve Stocker 19.15, 13 Marc Jones 21.40, 14 Jamie Betts 22.02, 74 Mike Davis 27.48, 89 Nem James 28.54, 105 Martin Gill 31.06, 136 Roger Harrison-Jones 36.49, 137 Steve Hatfield 36.58.

Conwy: 59 Steve Weedman 23.30, 82 Andy Clark 25.02, 202 Debbie Weedman 30.55.

Sherwood Pines: 225 Claudia Smith 31.54.

The full team results for last week’s Borders Road-Running League inaugural relays in Birkenhead Park were not available at the time of going to Press, but the club’s individual times were:- Senior women: Claudia Smith 7.59, Nicki Triggs 7.46, Lisa Lines 7.13, Rachel Shipley 5.42, Senior men: Oliver Birch-Jones 5.18, Nem James 7.01, Ben Thomas 5.57, Alex Ryder 5.03. Veteran men: Dan Liddle 6.09, Paul Sanders 6.06, Darren Blazier 5.43, Marc Jones (unknown).

Long-serving members of the club were sad to learn this week of the passing of Win Mullen-James, who was a member of the club for many years and also coached the juniors. Through their Rhuddlan-based business Athletes’ Feet she and husband Alan supported many events and clubs across North Wales and the North West.
