Mandy Cartwright and Sophie Johnson in happy mood after their Lancashire trail run - Gareth's Press Report 15th December 2024

Finding a race at this time of year often means having to travel further afield but that did not deter some members of Prestatyn Running Club at the weekend.

The most adventurous were captains Sophie Johnson and Mandy Cartwright who visited Clitheroe in Lancashire for the Winter Tolkien Trail Race, an 11.1k race with 162 metres of elevation. Passing through the grounds of Stoneyhurst College, the scenic course included woodland trails and paths along the River Ribble. Sophie finished in 69.20 and Mandy in 73.01.

Also hitting the trail were Marc Jones and Jo Lewis, who joined a smallish field for the Trail by Torchlight race in Llangollen, which was just under five miles long but included 750 feet of climbs. Mark was placed 29th in 51.20, with Jo, who was second lady over 50, 42nd overall in 58.50.

In January Andy Scott set himself a target of doing a different race each month and he achieved it, his "firsts" including a night race and a trail half-marathon. He concluded at the Stockport 10-miler on Sunday, clocking 1-37.

Supervet Martin Cortvriend has had a year of ups and downs, coping with health problems and yet still managing to win the three North Wales titles in the M70 class. They came in the Holyhead 5-miler, the Fairy Freckled Cow trail championship and the Cilcain mountain race. On Saturday he and his wife Vicky turned out in the Abermaw Parkrun on the promenade in Barmouth, which was his 360th Parkrun. In total he has run at 200 different venues in 16 different countries. In Barmouth he finished 16th in 23.36.

Runners in the Nova Parkrun had to contend with a strong wind which didn't help them at any stage but the club still managed an excellent "double". Tom Carter came from behind to win and Eve Manifold was not only first lady home but also managed a pb.

Nova results: 1 Tom Carter 17.30, 6 Jamie Betts 19.14, 10 Marc Jones 22.28, 11 Ed Shirt 22.50, 13 Eve Manifold 23.36, 16 Dave Ellis 24.26, 18 Paul Sanders 24.42, 37 Andy Clark 28.00,38 Mark Dakeyne 28.17, 43 Cathy Wood 28.58, 53 Grahame Shone 30.31, 62 Martin Gill 31.23, 67 Debbie Weedman 31.58, 82 Karl Martin 33.20, 125 Julie Evans 52.00.

Ruthin: 9 Dafydd Montgomery 21.45 (pb).

The club's annual pre-Christmas social run will be on December 23, when a

collection of cash or food will be made for the local foodbank.
